Privacy, Security, and Identity Theft

Although identity theft is becoming more prevalent, there are many things you can do to protect your information.

  • Shred any documents that contain your bank account, credit card, and social security numbers.
  • Photocopy the contents of your wallet. If it is lost or stolen, you will know what you had in your wallet, as well as all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call and cancel.
  • Never have your social security number printed on your checks.
  • Never give your checking account, credit card, or social security number to someone over the phone unless you have initiated the call to a legitimate company.
  • Review your bank statements promptly and notify us immediately to report any suspect transactions.

If your personal information is stolen, there are still things you can do to protect yourself.

  • Immediately contact your bank and credit card companies to cancel your cards and place stop payments on missing checks.
  • File a police report with your local police department. This proves to credit providers you were diligent and this is the first step towards a possible investigation.
  • Call the three national credit reporting organizations and the Social Security Administration immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and social security number.
    • Equifax: 800-525-6285
